Week 17 - Katherine to Wyndham Western Australia

On the road from Kakadu to Pine Creek more controlled burns.

The kites know there are small animals on the roads escaping the heat.

This was a bit hot in the car!

Pine Creek the train town.  A railway here in the war years.
An old gold town as well.

Back in Katherine for another couple of nights.  Judy needed a glasses fix-up.

From Katherine we spent a day at Edith Falls. Good to see some water and a lovely picnic area.

On the road west - escarpment country.

How about this for a road train - 4 NZ petrol tankers!!

Our overnight stop at Gregory National Park.

Lots of these lovely Boab trees around here.

The Victoria River by the camp.

We passed the turn-off to Bullo Station the site of the Sara Henderson books.

A lovely pair at the Border Post

At the Western Australia Border all vehicles inspected.  No fruit, veg. or honey allowed into WA.

We stayed the night in Kununurra

We still have not seen our Cane Toad yet.
They are a major pest - poisonous to anything that eats them.

Views over Kununurra

An irrigation channel and Mango orchards.
Lots of water around here.  Nearby is Lake Argyle the largest man made lake in OZ.

A fig tree growing out of the rock.

A large irrigation dam as you leave Kununurra.

More escarpments and Boabs on the way to Wyndham.

Our camp at Wyndham which is near the coast but you can't see the sea!

Happy about this.

This Boab was in our camp.  Over 2,000 yrs old?

Views from the local lookout. The coast is in the distance!

A new fishing wharf. Notice the rise and fall allowed for.
Not sure if this is for the tides or the floods - the latter probably.

Iron ore was being trucked to the small port and barged out to a ship.
162 tonnes allowed for gross weight on the roads. 44 in NZ I think!
This ore had been picked up and put down 5x to get it into the ship!

These Dreamtime statues were in Wyndham.

A donkey in the camp.  Apparently there were large herds of wild donkeys around.
This fella just roams around the town.
