Well so much for getting this bolg out in a week!!! Now 12/11/13.
From Ceduna we headed down the coast road thru Streaky Bay. (2/11/13)
Great pubs.
At Streaky Bay you could BUY water!
More grain storage all the way to Elliston.
This was a short day as Dave had a crook back and sitting in the car was not good.
Elliston just a small beach place but with a lovely beach in the Bay and a rocky ocean coastline.
We see lots of these Shingle Back Lizards on the road - mostly squashed!
Next day we had a lunch stop at Coffin Bay. Looked like a holiday settlement with lots of pleasure fishing boats.
Also right in the Bay lots of oyster farms.
From here to Port Lincoln lots of grain again and the harvest in action.
The harvesters dump their loads into these moveable bins and the trucks pick up from these.
There is no truck alongside the harvester in the paddock as we see in NZ.
Port Lincoln Camp with a great view.
We had a day out at the Lincoln National Park - the land in the distance in the camp photo.
A windy hot day with heaps of flies!! Great beaches and blue water.
We could spot some sealions/ seals out on the island. We also saw a large dolphin feeding in the breakers. The whales have now moved north. There must be sharks around as there is a shark cage trip available. They also farm Tuna as we do Salmon. In the NP we also saw emu, lizards and 1 - 2 snakes! so lots of wildlife.
Port Lincoln is a huge grain port. A nice place.
The fire season has now started. It was already up to catastrophic and there were some worrying fires back near the WA border where we have come from!
Great anti drink drive/speed road signs. Would we be allowed these in NZ?
From Port Lincoln NE to Whyalla.
Now from grain back to mining.
Whyalla has 2 huge steel mills using the ore from inland Mt Iron. They make all the rail lines here.
In the war years they built ships and manufactured the gun shells and bullets in these mills.
Quite a big town but everything red from the ore dust. Melbourne Cup day.
From Whyalla up round the head of Spencer Gulf and down to Port Pirie. Still short days in the car because of the old fella's back!
Port Pirie had another large mill along with the usual grain silos.
Stayed 1 night here. Lovely old buildings in all the towns we pass thru. This is the old railway station Port Pirie.
From here south to Adelaide.
Lots of market gardens to the north. Tomatoes?
We stayed in the Blair Camp at the Blair NP up in the hills of Adelaide. A great camp and area but a good climb and workout for the Pajero to get there.
We stayed 4 days in Adelaide to catch up on washing, computer etc. We timed it just right to see the Adelaide Xmas parade. Into the CBD by train - free with our Gold Cards!!!
A great parade with 60+ floats and heaps of clowns and bands. 320,000 there to watch with kids everywhere. A great morning.
We also took a trip out to the port area. Again grain but also heaps of imported cars and heavy manufacturing. This is the navy ship yard above.
A trip up to a lookout above our camp and the view over Adelaide.
Not long after this sign near our camp we saw our 1st Koalas in the wild!! By the busy road so we could not stop.
From Adelaide we will make our way across to Melbourne (via coast), then Sydney and back to Brisbane (probably?) We can do longer days now as Dave's back OK.
Next blog probably another 2 weeks??
